General Supervisor Terminal Operations

Since 2004 C. Steinweg Oman LLC (CSO) operates a large general cargo terminal in Sohar (Oman) and employs approximately 500 fte. This terminal a.o. facilitates the transfer of cargoes between ship and shore as well as transshipment of cargoes. CSO handles a wide variety of cargoes: Bulk (concentrates, ores, special products), Project Cargo (OOG and heavy lifts), Steel Products (coils, billets, rebars, wire rods), Generals, RoRo (cars, building equipment, mafi) and Timber. The management of cargo related activities i.e. physical movement is executed by a team of 6 general supervisors under the responsibility of the Operations Manager. CSO operates 24 hrs per day from Sunday till Thursday. On Fridays and Saturdays roro operations continue. Other activities are executed on overtime basis however, occur frequently. The main responsibilities of a general supervisor are the following.

As the GSV you are the leader in the shift, you will give orders and instructions to ship supervisors, foremen, operators and dockers. You will advise the operation manager on team members’ performance. The GSV works in shift rotation. In a team of 7/8 people; a 24/7 operation is covered (Incl. weekends and holidays).

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Managing vessel loading and discharge – the general supervisor plans where ships will berth. In close cooperation with the yard planner, yard locations will be allocated. Besides, he’ll determine the number of port operatives and equipment required to load and unload vessels safely and in time. General supervisors will brief the shift supervisors, who then supervise the port operatives in getting the work done. The general supervisor will closely follow performance, anticipate and when necessary adjust the planning. In addition to the before mentioned he’ll regularly check the quality of the work.
  • Managing delivery – the general supervisor plans and allocates delivery resources. Instructs delivery supervisors, monitors performance and quality of the work.
  • Managing safety – the nature of the activities imply an increased risk of injury and damage. It is the responsibility of a general supervisor to ensure all working areas are safe, workers get instructed and are fully trained to do their job efficiently and safely.
  • Managing staff – the general supervisor makes recommendations regarding hiring, discipline and promotion of subordinates; authorizes leave and overtime; in close cooperation with the shift supervisors he advises on job related problems and evaluates and rates employee performance.
  • Liaising with customers and other port users – the general supervisor liaises with other port users such as consignees, inspectors, surveyors, transporters, shipping agents and the port authority.
  • Continuous) Process improvement – the general supervisor records process interruptions and deficiencies, informs the operations manager and participates in improvement solutions. 

Many of the above mentioned tasks are system supported. CSO runs advanced Terminal Operating, Equipment Monitoring and HR software.

Who are you:

The position of general supervisor can be a next step in the career of a port operations supervisor or cargo superintendent position, particularly stevedoring or general operations. Also maritime officers with a background in general cargo / project cargo will fit the job profile.

  • Working level will be MBO / HBO or equivalent, not necessarily backed up by diploma and/or certificates, but in practice; 
  • Extensive work experience is essential, theoretical background in the business is considered to be an advantage; 
  • You are a natural people manager with an open mind to the international environment you work in;
  • You are able to take decisions and resilient if needed;
  • You are a great communicator and a “logic thinker”;
  • You have an eye for hands-on improvement and value the international environment;
  • As a person you are persistent in reaching objectives but flexible in the way they can be reached;
  • You are proficient in English, Basic Arabic is a major advantage;
  • You are in good physical condition and resilient to a warm climate.
